What’s the Difference Between a Serum and Moisturizer?

If you’re a skin care lover like us, you may be asking yourself—what’s the difference between a serum and a moisturizer? Can I use a serum instead of a moisturizer? Should I use both a serum and a moisturizer? Because we want you to have the skin care routine of your dreams (that both brings you a sense of calm and supports your skin concerns), we thought we’d answer your burning questions.

What is a serum?

A serum is a concentrated formula designed with active ingredients to target specific skin concerns, like dark spots or fine lines. For example, our Rosewater Serum features Hyaluronic Acid to help draw in moisture and help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Serums also tend to be lighter than a moisturizer, typically water-based so they can absorb into the skin quickly.

What is a moisturizer?

A moisturizer is a thicker formula, typically cream-based, that is designed with hydrating or emollient ingredients to keep skin hydrated. Moisturizers tend to be heavier than serums. Many moisturizers also serve multi-functions by adding beneficial actives, such as our Rosewater Moisturizer which is designed with Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid to lock in moisture and balance skin tone.

What are the benefits?

Serums are designed to be potent, delivering a high dose of actives that work to penetrate the skin. That means they can be pretty effective in targeting specific skin concerns.

Moisturizers, on the other hand, are designed to retain skin moisture and maintain the skin’s barrier function. Essentially, moisturizers help lock in all the previous skin care products, like a serum, and retain moisture. They can also help protect the skin from environmental elements that may cause skin damage.

When should I use a serum versus a moisturizer?

Most people will benefit from using both a serum and a moisturizer together, as this will increase the benefits. This can depend on the season, your skin type and skin concerns. For example, if you have dry skin and it’s winter, using both a serum and a moisturizer is key to targeting skin concerns and maintaining hydrated skin.

Typically, it’s recommended you use them together, once or twice daily. Place the serum onto your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing. This will help lock in the beneficial serum so it can get to work while keeping your skin hydrated.
